An Australian and Afghan soldier on a patrol searching for potentially deadly improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the Village of Musazai.
Mid caption: A recent mentored patrol near the village of Musazai, in the Mirabad Valley, clearly demonstrates the increasing capability of the Afghan National Police (ANP) and Afghan National Army (ANA). Increasingly, locals assist the ANP with information that leads to the capture of insurgents, their hidden IEDs and weapons caches.
As a result of the received information, a cordon and search operation was conducted and an individual was detained by the ANP. With the discovery of two cached IEDs, Australian Engineer elements were requested to assist the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) to better exploit the area and to ensure no further caches or explosive threats were present. These searches led to further caches being found, the contents of these weapons stockpiles including ammunition, RPG rounds and further IED components.
These finds are the latest in a string of successful operations which continue to deny insurgents the tools they require to fight. Each patrol brings the ANSF one step closer to taking the lead in security and ensuring a safer future for the people of Uruzgan Province.
